Business Development Manager – STM Journals

Our client, an academic publisher with one of the most successful track records for growth over the last ten years, is looking to recruit a Business Development Manager, to promote their journal portfolio with specific emphasis on the facilitation of article submissions from the pharmaceutical and medical communication industry organisations.

Reporting to the Head of Commercial Sales, the main responsibilities include:

  • Matching portfolio journals to clinical trial pipelines and pharmaceutical drug developments
  • Presenting the portfolio to pharmaceutical publication planners and medical communication organisations
  • Creating interest in and submission of original research articles, reviews, and other content
  • Identifying current industry publication projects and requirements
  • Identifying key authors and establishing working relationships with industry contacts
  • Instigating sponsored projects such as supplements, article collections and special issues
  • Building the foundation of unsolicited original research and commissioned industry-funded papers
  • Attending key events and conferences to establish relationships with key stakeholders
  • Providing reports on industry intelligence to sales, journal editorial, and commissioning teams
  • Increasing the profile of the journal portfolio in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Increasing author page/article processing charge revenues via submission of unsolicited industry papers.

The successful candidate will have proven journals publishing experience in either editorial, sales or a publication-planning role within medical publishing and have a working knowledge of the pharmaceutical and medical communication industries. You will have significant experience of biomedical research and have a degree-level qualification in a biomedical subject. You will ideally have experience of peer review and manuscript decision-making processes and have networked with senior contacts at Pharma and Medical publication planning meetings. You will have excellent organisational and prioritisation skills, have a strong attention to detail and be able to demonstrate initiative, present convincingly and have superb communication skills.
