An academic publisher, with one of the most successful track records for growth over the last ten years, is looking to recruit a Commissioning Editor for their Books team.

Reporting to the Senior Commissioning Editor, the Commissioning Editor is responsible for finding and contracting new books and new editions and working with authors to deliver a frontlist of titles in healthcare. The main responsibilities include:

  • Commissioning new titles and new editions from an agreed hitlist
  • Devising and carrying out project plans that maximise commercial potential and profitability
  • Transmitting manuscripts to achieve frontlist budget
  • Contributing to list strategy formation and hitlisting
  • Building relationships and working closely with authors to ensure projects remain on schedule and delivered to plan
  • Proposing and monitoring costs and agrees pricing on each title to achieve profitability
  • Developing market knowledge through campus-calling and desk-based research to inform publishing and strategic plans.

The successful candidate will be degree educated and have experience of working in an editorial role within book publishing, preferably in the academic sector. You will be a confident communicator, able to form collaborative relationships and effectively influence authors and colleagues, with a good knowledge of the academic books market, as well as knowledge of the key functions and processes within academic publishing are crucial. You must be commercially astute and have the proven ability to analyse market knowledge and feedback and apply it to shape book projects and strategic commissioning plans.
