Our client, a leading STM society is looking to recruit a Head of Academic Publications to lead the organisations publications and ensuring the activities are delivered in accordance with their strategic aims and objectives.
Head of Academic Publications: Key responsibilities
Head of Academic Publications will lead the strategic development of the Journal and Book portfolio
Lead the publications staff team in the delivery of the strategic plan
Maintain a broad overview of key issues, debates and developments in journal and book publishing, particularly in relation to the developments in Open Access publishing, and advise on the impact of these on the organisations publications activities
Oversee the editorial and operational processes and systems of all publications ensuring the provision of an efficient and effective service with a focus on a high-quality service for editors and editorial boards, authors, and referees
Lead the preparation of publications budgets and financial forecasts
Lead the engagement and development of relationships with external publishing partners and service providers
Develop a marketing, promotions and communications plan for the publications portfolio
Line manage the Publishing Editor and the Publications Assistant
Be part of the Senior Leadership Team to support the overall development of the society’s activities.
Head of Academic Publications: Skills/experience
Educated to degree level or equivalent
Extensive experience of strategic planning and development in STEM publications
Strong Knowledge of the Open Access publishing landscape
Experience of external engagement in the development of new publishing opportunities
Experience of managing staff
Experience of financial and contract management and budget forecasting
Knowledge and understanding of the research publishing landscape, including funding and changes to public policy
Knowledge of the marketing and promotion of journals
A positive, ‘can do’, supportive, people-centred approach with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to deal with stakeholders at all levels is essential.
