Senior Director, Books Editorial – Scholarly Publishing

Our client, a leading independent academic and professional publisher is recruiting for a Senior Director, Books Editorial to join their senior team. The role will focus on developing and implementing the publishing strategy for the books programme. Reporting to the Vice President, Books & Social Science Innovation, the successful candidate will directly manage the UK Books editorial team and will be responsible for strategic planning and ownership of publishing decisions, resource and setting and tracking targets and KPI’s to ensure the publishing programme delivers on the commercial goals.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop an ambitious long-term strategic plan for the UK books programme to deliver growth and profitability with a focus on impactful academic and reference titles
  • Develop and deliver on an ambitious long-term strategy for digital textbook product working closely with internal teams to grow the product line internationally
  • Plan for future print ad digital needs by identifying current and future market trends
  • Build competitor knowledge and key relationships with the Editorial leads at competitors
  • Work with the Data Analyst to examine trends and patterns in sales, revenue, and market data to inform our publishing strategy
  • Lead the Directors/Associate Directors in executing on editorial strategy and develop them into a strong and accountable management team
  • Create and nurture a vibrant and inclusive culture of learning where team diversity is fostered, celebrated and increased
  • Effectively collaborate with and influence leaders in Sales & Marketing, and other departments of the business, to deliver on publishing and sales goals
  • Set meaningful targets for your team and track and report on key performance indicators.

Successful candidates will have extensive experience in the global higher education publishing environment with strong proven leadership capabilities and demonstrable experience of people management. The role requires a sound commercial and business judgement with business finance acumen and a strong track record of delivering growth for a business unit. Individuals will need to have strong data analysis and excellent interpretation skills combined with strong interpersonal and negotiation skills. Highly effective delegation skills and a creative approach to resolving complex problems is essential.
