Our client, a leading and growing not-for-profit STM Open Access journal publisher, is looking for a Senior Editor to build upon the success of their Biology journal’s front section. This is an exciting opportunity to strategically lead the journal’s front section, overseeing pipeline of non-research content, with key input into setting the journal’s agenda and editorial voice.

Reporting to the Editor-in-Chief, the Front Section Senior Editor will be responsible for commissioning, assessing and developmentally editing short and long-form content that strategically helps the journal grow into new communities and addresses the most timely and significant issues in the life sciences.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Identifying, commissioning and developmentally editing front section collections and stand-alone content of strategic importance
  • Assessing direct submissions to the front section
  • Managing the peer-review of front section content
  • Overseeing the front section pipeline, ensuring a consistent output, with a dotted line to the rest of the editorial team
  • Contributing to writing editorials, blog posts and other related materials
  • Engaging in social media conversations around the content, increasing its reach and impact
  • Traveling to conferences and scientific institutions to represent the journal and to recruit high-quality submissions to the journal.

The successful candidate will have an advanced degree in the life sciences and several years’ experience working in life sciences / biomedical journals or similar, commissioning, assessing and developmentally editing front section or reviews for scholarly communication in the life sciences. A passion for science, scientific communication and Open Access is a must, as is a comfort working in a fast-paced collaborative environment and a flexibility to take on new challenges and deliver against firm deadlines. There is also a requirement in the role to have the availability to travel and meet scientists worldwide.
