Senior Policy Advisor – STM Society

One of the Worlds’ leading STM Societies is looking to appoint a Senior Policy Advisor on a full-time or part time permanent contract to work on topical policy issues and commission cutting-edge policy research, in order to further chemistry and the chemical sciences for the good of humanity.

Reporting to the Policy and Evidence Manager, Key accountabilities for the Senior Policy Advisor will include:

  • Develop and lead policy programmes and campaigns to achieve maximum impact for the chemical sciences on topics impacting research and the economy
  • Maintain a current understanding of policy impacting the research environment, its impact on the chemical sciences and of emerging and future trends
  • Build strong and effective relationships to develop and advance our Research Landscape and Economy goals in line with overall strategy
  • Line management of, including providing guidance and advice to Policy Advisers in the team working on Research Landscape and Economy
  • Management of outsourced research contracts
  • Support the Manager, Policy and Evidence in identifying key policy priorities, goals and influencing plans
  • Provide expert advice and briefings to colleagues and senior members of our governance in relation to current and emerging trends in Research Landscape and economy and on policy issues
  • Work with communications teams to ensure that the Research Landscape policy positions are well communicated internally, to society members and to external stakeholders via wider communications channels
  • Represent the society externally, including public speaking and occasional engagement with the media.

Suitable candidates will have demonstrable experience in a relevant role in public, private, higher education, research or charity sectors requiring an understanding of research and innovation policy and/or skills policy in the UK. A track record of developing, planning, delivering and reviewing complex projects and the ability to research, commission and evaluate detailed, complex quantitative and qualitative information and form clear recommendations tailored to different audiences is required. Strong leadership skills are required. Advanced Degree in science is preferred.
