Featured Development Editor – Academic Publishing

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join an award-winning digital publisher of academic resources as a Development Editor in a fast-paced environment. The role will focus on researching, commissioning and developing new projects and content and constructing detailed project proposals and costings for the editorial management team to consider.

Key responsibilities

  • Generate new project ideas and act as the lead editor for new digital projects
  • Develop new projects and commission new content to a high standard
  • Conduct market research on new project ideas and conduct surveys of competitors’ digital resources
  • Visit archives around the world to research and select appropriate primary sources for new projects
  • Meet with faculty and librarians on a regular basis, build academic networks and relevant contacts to assist with development of new project ideas
  • Attend conferences to meet new potential authors, conduct market research and participate in external presentations
  • Formulate costings and prepare detailed project proposals
  • Work closely with Senior Editors to manage resourcing requirements for your projects
  • If required, to manage a Development Assistant/Assistant Development Editor by providing day to day support with any queries and monitoring workflow and training needs
  • Develop ideas for enriching the content, adding value and functionality and work with colleagues from editorial production and technical to shape and optimize the project.

Experience

Ideal candidates will have experience in editorial or related roles within publishing with demonstrable experience as a successful project manager. Experience in building strong internal and external professional networks and partnerships is essential. Educated to undergraduate degree level in humanities or social sciences, candidates will have excellent communication skills and the ability to maintain strong working relationships with a diverse audience. Confident decision makers with negotiation skills and an excellent problem-solving approach will thrive in this role. Suitable candidates will have excellent attention to detail and have strong organisational skills which will help manage complex workflows and multiple projects simultaneously. Creative approaches to commissioning new content would be advantageous and being commercially aware of the market needs is desired. Spanish speaking and written skills would be an advantage but not essential.
