Our client, a leading academic and professional publisher with significant global presence is looking to recruit a Senior Commissioning Editor to join their successful Editorial team. This exciting opportunity will allow the postholder to develop a strategic hitlist of books in a designated subject or sub discipline, source and contract new books and new editions and will be responsible for working with under contract authors and colleagues to publish a “frontlist” of titles in line with budget.

Key responsibilities

 

  • Developing a hitlist of books to deliver on strategic and revenue goals
  • Commissioning new titles and new editions, generating future publishing pipeline
  • Transmitting manuscripts to achieve frontlist budget
  • Working closely with authors to deliver contract projects on schedule and budget
  • Proposing and monitoring costs and agreeing pricing to achieve profitability
  • Developing market knowledge through campus calling and desk-based research to inform future plans
  • Representing the company at conferences and author meetings
  • Actively looking for process improvements and cross departmental collaboration
  • Line managing a team to achieve targets and develop knowledge and skills.

Successful candidates will have a thorough understanding or demonstrable interest of the academic books market as well as previous commissioning experience, with an excellent track record of achieving targets and making sound commercial decisions. You will be confident in creating positive, engaged, working relationships with authors, able to communicate, collaborate and influence successfully and efficiently with internal and external stakeholders. In addition, this role will be best suited to those with excellent organisational and prioritisation skills with the ability to delegate effectively.
