Our client, a leading and expanding international STEM publisher, is looking for a Senior Publishing Editor to lead the strategic management of a portfolio of journals, working on acquisitions and new launches within the publisher’s journal publishing program.

This role is exclusive to Telfer Partners.

The Senior Publishing Editor will collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders to develop the journal lists in the portfolio and identify opportunities for growth. Reporting to the Editorial Director, the main responsibilities include:

  • Developing and maintaining excellent working relationships with Editors-in-Chief and Editorial Boards
  • Using key research knowledge to actively identify development opportunities by acquisition or for new journal launches
  • Working with key stakeholders to increase journal visibility, submissions and reputation
  • Ensuring the smooth running of existing journals in liaison with key internal teams
  • Organising and hosting Editorial Board meetings and driving content development discussions
  • Ensuring relevant guidelines and policies are followed, and overseeing contract renegotiations
  • Managing budgets and operational effectiveness of the journals, identifying improvements
  • Ensuring journal representation in indexing services, preparing journals for additional services
  • Actively evaluating and recruiting journal editors, adjusting editorial structures if necessary
  • Attending conferences when required, running workshops and making presentations.

The successful candidate will have significant STM journal publishing experience, including portfolio development commissioning, and an excellent understanding of the peer review process, editorial policies and marketing. An academic degree in science is essential, ideally in medicine or life sciences, and a professional fluency in both English and French is required. Knowledge of indexation services, particularly medical disciplines, and of medical ethics and ethical policies is preferred. A thorough understanding of the scientific research community and an interest in Open Access publishing is crucial. This role will suit a proactive publishing professional with excellent communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills.
