A world leading not-for-profit STM society is looking for a highly motivated publishing professional to join their journal team at a senior level as an Executive Editor. Leading the team, the Executive Editor will be responsible for setting and implement the strategic direction for the portfolio of designated journals.

Key responsibilities

  • Set, develop and implement the journal portfolio strategy and the individual journal strategies
  • Develop and deliver the portfolio and individual journal KPIs in terms of usage, market share, quality, reputation and customer service
  • Set, develop and lead the implementation of the journals’ commissioning plans
  • Developing the best authorship and readership for the journals, through networking, personal contact, commissioning, attendance at conferences etc
  • Ensure the continuous and active maintenance and development of the journal portfolio
  • Identify new journal and other product/services opportunities
  • Continuously monitor and evaluate the requirements of the scientific community, and the STM and competitor landscape
  • Responsible for setting annual budgets and forecasts and monitoring financial performance
  • Build excellent working relationships with Editorial Board(s), lead and influence the Editorial Board(s) to develop the journal(s) in line with their strategies.

Successful candidates will have considerable STM Journal publishing experience including commissioning and have an excellent understanding of the peer review process and editorial policy. A science degree is required (chemical sciences preferred) with an up-to-date knowledge of and passion for the chemical sciences. Excellent communication, influencing, negotiation and relationship building skills will be key in this role. Proven experience in leading and motivating a team is essential. Effective organisational and time-management skills are required f as well as the ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines. Previous experience with Editorial Boards and contacts with relevant communities would be preferable. National and International travel will be required.
